A ten-minute shape for the entry.
- Minute 0–1: name the feeling and where you notice it in your body.
- Minute 1–7: answer one prompt without editing for fairness or style.
- Minute 7–9: underline the facts, needs and boundaries you can act on.
- Minute 9–10: finish “For the next hour, I will…”
When you want to text them.
Write the exact message in a private draft. Then answer: “What job have I given their reply?” and “Would I still want to send this if I knew there would be no answer?” The goal is not to censor the feeling; it is to separate saying it from sending it.
When nostalgia edits out the difficult parts.
Make two columns: what you genuinely miss, and what your body or daily life does not miss. Let both be true. A complete memory can hold tenderness and the reasons the relationship could not continue.
When anger is loud.
Begin with: “The line I wish had not been crossed was…” Then write the boundary in present tense: “Now I will…” Keep the entry private while the feeling is hot. An unsent letter is a container, not a rehearsal you are obliged to deliver.
When you are rebuilding a life that was ‘we.’
- What became smaller in my life during this relationship?
- Which person, place or practice made me feel most like myself?
- What is one decision this week that belongs only to me?
- What quality do I want to bring into my next relationship—including my relationship with myself?
Know when the page is becoming a loop.
Longer is not automatically deeper. If every entry reconstructs the same argument, if you feel more agitated for hours afterward, or if writing replaces sleep, food, work or human support, shorten the session or stop. Structured expressive writing has mixed results after separation and should not be sold as a universal cure.
Privacy on the prompt picker.
The picker chooses from a fixed set on your device. It does not ask for your story, create an account or send your selection to No Contact. Write in your own notebook or use the app if you want a private place to keep the entry.
Sources and limits
We use sources to bound claims, not to turn a general guide into a diagnosis.
- Expressive writing after marital separationSbarra et al. (2013); a randomized study showing why expressive writing should not be presented as universally helpful.
- Self-concept recovery after breakupLongitudinal research linking recovery of a clear sense of self with later wellbeing; association does not make a prompt a treatment.
